Happy 2009! San Joaquin Outdoor Education is excited to continue to educate, engage, and welcome thousands of new students to the redwood forest! Each week, we continue to give hands-on outdoor learning experiences to students of the Central Valley. SJOE focuses on science and nature, but gives students much, much, much more!
Students who attend outdoor school will leave with new self confidence, team building skills, communication skills, and a better understanding of the natural world around them. Whether they live in a city or in a rural town, students explore the power that they have to change the world...one small step at a time!
We are pleased to welcome 9 new naturalists to the staff of '08/'09, each with a diverse background that helps enrich our program.

Welcome to the photo gallery of the San Joaquin Outdoor School, a program of the San Joaquin Office of Education. About 6,000 fifth and sixth graders and 700 high school cabin leaders attend Outdoor School each year, spending five days and four nights exploring and learning about the redwood forest, marsh and tidepools.

- The purpose of the San Joaquin County Outdoor Education (SJOE) program is to give students a meaningful and enjoyable environmental education experience while in companionship in the out-of-doors with other children and adults. A Message from '06--'07 Redwood Glen Site Director River
Students, teachers, and parents alike have grown up loving Science Camp-- for the social growth and responsibility it instills in students, for the outdoor exploration, and for the science knowledge that students gain. Science Camp is a treasured part of almost every San Joaquin County student's life. We here at SJOE are so grateful to be part of this magical experience.
With that in mind, our way of speaking about SJOE has been changing in the past few years. "Science Camp" has become "Outdoor School." Counselors have become "Cabin Leaders." When students explore the forest, they work together to complete challenges, learn lessons. They engage in activities, as opposed to playing games.
First and foremost, we value education here. We teach according to California State Science Standards for 5th and 6th graders and take pride in our contribution to their education. We also span numerous other disciplines in our teaching, such as art, language arts, math, and social studies. Being outdoors is a very effective way to learn, and one that yields very real results.
